Fire Tree Afternoon

As if the hot atmosphere and brilliant sun is not enough to remind us that summer is here, the brilliant red fire trees all over the golf course just screams summer! At this time of the year, the tress lose most of their leaves and red flowers begin appearing all over the branches. These tress are all over the place and the one pictured above is at the golf course near the road going to the our office. A few of my colleagues and I just couldn't resist taking a little break from work and examine the trees a bit closer. We just goofed around looking out for stray golf balls and the occasional cow which actually looked surly. We took a few pictures (some rather embarrassing ones with bunches of flowers on my head) and head on back to work.

Making the most out of family and friends

Our company just launched an exciting program designed to attract mature talents into its workforce. They plan to do this by offering rewards to employees with successful referrals from our friends and family (yep including family). The reason why it is so exciting is that the company will give us lots of freebies and wads of cash in exchange for these talents. There are certain conditions however before you can get that reward. The applicant should stick to the company for several months and the employee should still be employed with the company at the end of that period. The offer is limited only to technical positions in the company (engineers, geologists, chemists, etc.) and not other positions such as Human Resources, Marketing, Accountants, and IT. Apparently, IT professionals and Marketing staff are a dime a dozen these days. Clever huh? Saving up for the new year

Piggy Series Originally uploaded by Jepster It's a fresh new year and I'm still trying to pay off the expenses I incurred during the holidays. That is why for this year, I have resolved to be more budget conscious (no more impulse buying *sob*) and hopefully finish the projects I have started last year that I was not able to complete because of lack of funds. The biggest of these projects is of course my flat which after more than 2 years since moving in still looks like a storage space with a small clearing for the bed and a small table. Things that I should spend less on: * Eating out -- I used to cook often but lately I have been eating out a lot. I hope to change that this year. The downside is that I tend to get fatter when I do my own cooking :p * Buying overpriced coffee -- Ok I admit it, I have probably spend a whole lot of money on coffee than I should have just for the months of November, December and January. Hot summers in the Philippines

The week of lent is oftentimes regarded as the warmest time of the year in the Philippines (at least according to traditional wisdom). Sure enough, temperatures in Iloilo has been getting as high as 36 degrees C in the afternoon for the past few days (and for the rest of the week according to forecasts). I have been vacationing in Iloilo since early last week and on a whim, I have decided to bring my portable room thermometer/hygrometer to Iloilo. Perhaps it is my obsessive nature that makes me want to know the inside and outside temperature and humidity levels of the house, or maybe it is my process control engineer background that delights in looking at instrumentation readings. Whatever the case may be, I think it is driving the people in the house nuts. Telling people nonchalantly the temperature and relative humidity in casual conversation gets old very fast and it doesn't help that it is oftentimes followed by complaining that the air conditioning unit needs to be fixed. Presenting: The Mall of Asia

I just recently accompanied a few friends to the Mall of Asia I keep hearing so much about. I think it's supposed to be the 2nd largest Mall in Asia. It just opened a few weeks earlier and it was still in a "soft opening" period with almost a 3rd of the shops already open. "Sprawling" is the first word that popped in my head when it first came into view. The place is huge! The fact that it was the only large structure in the reclaimed area by the bay also added to the effect. The mall even provided free tram rides around the complex for those people who are too lazy to walk from one end of the mall to the other. The trams looked nice but too bad I didn't had the chance to ride in them. The big globe in the front was the first thing you will notice when you approach it from the main coastal road (well it used to be a coastal road before all the reclamation activities started). Is it hard to be with somebody else when the right one comes along? Not really. It has been quite some time since I have updated this blog. It is just that I am very preoccupied with some things that have been happening in my life lately. I have a confession to make. No, it's not a very big confession at that. It is just something very personal that I want to get out of my system. I think I am in love. In fact, I fell in love twice in the last year. There I said it. It wasn't too hard as I thought. Nothing disastrous happened when I said it. No lightning flashed, the ground did not swallow me whole. Well, I suppose that is not the hardest part. That part is yet to come when I try to explain just what the hell I am talking about. It took so long to write about it here on my blog. I guess it's because of the feelings of guilt. Shrimp attack!

Shrimp attack! Originally uploaded by Jepster . I love seafood and shrimps in particular. But this is one shrimp that I wouldn't eat even if I get paid to do it. This shrimp came from the bathroom floor of one of the apartments at our company's residential compound. She was taking a bath and noticed the tiny shrimp ogling at her. She said she was a little freaked out by this and she scooped him up (I assume it's a male shrimp) using a clear plastic cup and brought it to the office the next day to show to everyone. Another person reported that he saw a shrimp (whether it's the same shrimp or not is uncertain) in his toilet bowl and when he tried flushing it, it just came back a few hours later. Some people might find him cute and everything but personally I am a bit creeped out by all of this. I would always think about critters lurking about whenever I'm at the toilet bowl doing my thing. I shudder to think what other life forms are hiding in the toilet bowl. What...

Antipolo Church - Dress Code Originally uploaded by Jepster This is a sign prominently displayed in the front of a local church in Antipolo, Rizal. Apparently, women should never wear red clothes. Orange and green are acceptable. Likewise, men wearing light blue clothes are frowned upon by the church but they really dig parishoners who wear a darker shade of blue :P
